Code-named P2, the 286, i286, or 80286 was first released on February 1, 1982, and referred to as the Intel 286. The 80286 had 134,000 transistors, ran at clock speeds from 4 MHz to 12 MHz, and was the first processor to be backward compatible with previous processors.
